It all began with a phone call between friends — Zander and Ben. One had a piece of land on a quiet stretch of Sri Lankan coastline; the other was searching for something meaningful after years spent chasing adventure across the globe. That call sparked a vision, and that vision became this haven on Mawella Bay.

Beachfront resort with terracotta roofs, small pool, palm-shaded thatch huts and fishing boats on a turquoise shoreline.

Their paths had first crossed somewhere between Ayurvedic retreats in Goa, vintage Mustang rentals in Ibiza, and the winding mountain passes of Asia. Zander had been running a successful motorbike tour business for a decade, a passion project fuelled by dusty roads and big horizons. Ben, meanwhile, was making waves on Sri Lanka’s south coast with a series of villas and restaurants. Zander felt the call to keep moving — this time toward the Mediterranean and beyond — and he sold the motorbike business to Ben, who carried it forward with the same spirit and energy based in Sri Lanka.

By the time Zander wrapped up a slow boat journey through Europe’s rivers and canals, the next adventure was already calling.

“Want to build a hotel?”

The answer was yes. Halcyon Mawella was born — part passion project, part midlife leap, and entirely shaped by their shared love of travel, community, and doing things just a little differently.

Halcyon Mawella is a reflection of our values — simplicity, sustainability, and community. Our design embraces natural materials and barefoot luxury. Our food comes from our own ¼-acre organic garden, and our signature cocktails are created with ingredients grown just steps from the bar. Even our drinks program operates on a zero-waste philosophy, composting what we don’t use.

But what makes this place truly special isn’t just what’s on the plate or in the room — it’s what happens beyond the walls.
